Romanticism was a literary and artistic movement that appeared in France at the end of the 18th century. Hubert Robert, a French painter, was one of the leading French artists of the second half of the 18th century, from the Romantic era, known for his landscapes and “caprices”.

The work ” Staircase of the Park of the Farnese Palace Park, 1765 – 1770 ” is a picture of French history from the second half of the 18th century. It was commissioned by Louis XV to decorate the walls of the castle of La Miette in Paris. Due to the great crisis that afflicted French society during the time of Louis XVI, it came on the market.
One of the most outstanding artists of his time Hubert Robert, (born 05.22.1733, Paris – died of a stroke on 04.15.1808, Paris). He became a specialist in painting ruins, ancient temples, and ruined buildings, whether real or imagined, and picturesque landscapes from Italy and France.
This is why he was nicknamed “Robert of the Ruins” by the eighteenth-century philosopher and critic Denis Diderot. In addition to Italian and French landscapes, he also liked to paint scenes of Ermenonville, Marly and Versailles.
He also showed modern buildings as they might look after they fall into disrepair. Robert left Paris in 1754. Went to Rome and studied there at the French Academy.

Robert of the ruins appears to not just be a great artist but a great philosopher as well. Ruins are the ultimate reality of this passing world. Thank you for the lovely painting and valuable background information.
